The End of an Era?

The Technics 1200 is hands down the best turntable ever produced, and arguably one of the most reliable pieces of electronics ever. Its been in production essentially unchanged for 35 years. It made Dj'ing as we know it today possible. Sadly, there have been rumors floating all around the interwebs about it being discontinued. This is the most substantial article I could find about the situation.

Goodbye JJC!!!!!

Jesse Conrad, who I first encountered years ago when he was selling records and stereo equipment on his stoop, is leaving for a year in Indonesia. Me and Jesse(DJJJC)have spent the past few years spinning at various venues around the city. Together we are Dollar Grillz. This Monday at Elaina's will serve as his farewell party. Dj Frosty will be this weeks guest. Whether you know him or not, come see him off properly, disco style.

Oh yea, and he's a collector of rad vintage synths and uses them to make things.. like this:

UMC's

Hailing from Staten Island, this duo released their first album "Fruits of Nature" in '91. They were short lived, as they broke up shortly after their second album. They're a perfect example of early 90's east coast hip-hop. Enjoy.

Monday Guests

This Monday's gonna be tight. Kicking off a string of Mondays packed with awesome guests, Raymo aka Dj/Vj Kingspin aka Ray from "Shades of Grey" will be gracing us with his presence before his move to Stockholm. He will be spinning records as well as video. You can check some of his work here:

Earshades

upcoming guests include:

8/9 - ryan t (robotique)
8/16 - billy w (robotique)
8/23 - dj frosty (its a pleasure)

Obscurity

If you like overly obscure synth-pop from bands that literally don't even exist, you'll love this. The actual band is "Secession" from Scotland. They did only one full length album. This song had all the members, but for some reason they called themselves NoHo. Anyways, I think it's good, even if it's in a slightly cheesy way.

Ice Cream Castles

I've been pretty broke as of late. I love the challenge being broke gives when shopping for records. This is a good dollar bin score I made a few weeks ago at
Marvelous Records in West Philly. I love Morris Day, I really do.

New Party

For all the old school Philly ska fans, "Ruder Than You" is a name you already know. For those that don't, they've been a staple in the Philly ska scene since 1991. The band's Leader Doug Dubrosky, Punk Chris (if you don't know ask somebody), and myself bring you an all-vinyl monthly event that will leave even the most avid aficionados of obscure Jamaican records impressed. Old time ska, rocksteady, jamaican funk and soul is the theme. Two-toned rudeboy dress is encouraged. Every 4th tuesday at Tattoo Mom (530 South st. Philly). No cover. 1.50 pabst til 11. 1.50 meat and veggie tacos til they're gone. You can check out the facebook event
here.

Just for old time sake

This is a mix a made of a few tracks and edits from some local West Philly Dj's, including Kenny Raw, Apt One, DJJJC and myself. I made it a long time ago and kind of forgot about it. It's a little rough for sure.

Shades of Grey - promo mix.

It's been awhile since I posted. The weather has been awesome and it makes me computer lazy. Here's a record that I've had for years. Jimmy Spicer is a mysterious dude. He was in the old school scene from the late 70's and early 80's. He was well known for his single "Super Rhymes. He pretty much only released 12" singles. The break at 2:30 is tight, complete with timbales.

Also, this Saturday at Elaina's soul I'll be spinning records with Kenny Raw, Propergander and Apt One. From Jared:

After a year of being away, we are returning to deliver the best funk, soul, hip-hop, reggae, rock, electro, house, and all else that gets the dance floor moving. Those that attended our last party in February know that it was among our best in a long line of solid parties, and we have no intention of bringing anything lesser this time around. Elena's Soul, formerly known as Leroy's Showcase Lounge, used to be a hangout and performing spot back in the day for up-and-coming soul singers and jazz artists, including Philly's own Patti Labelle, The O'Jays, and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. There's a large dance floor, drink specials, no cover charge, what more could you ask for on a Saturday night? So come out and celebrate with us, and revel in all things funky...DJ Properganda, Kenny Raw, and DJ Apt One will all be spinning, doing what they do best...flyer design by the indomitable Gregory Smith at Out for Stardom...
